Overview

The Department of Critical Care Medicine came into existence in the year 2022 with the opening of new state of the art modern ICU in the first floor of the hospital. The department has expanded to include qualified critical care physicians who have trained from prestigious institutes across India. In a short period of time, the department has reached to a point where the quality and spectrum of its clinical services are comparable to international standards.

The highlights include 24×7 rapid response team, critically ill patient transport team within the hospital for all radiological and other procedures, bedside renal replacement therapy (dialysis) and plasmapheresis, diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, point of care ultrasound (POCUS) of the critically ill patient including echocardiography, placement of arterial and venous catheters and percutaneous drain placement.

The unit is equipped with well trained intensivists and state of the art amenities to provide the entire range of intensive care services including multi parameter monitors, infusion pumps, airway management, mechanical ventilation-invasive and non-invasive, circulatory support including advanced haemodynamic monitoring, renal support with dialysis or hemofiltration, enteral and parenteral nutrition, blood component therapy, sedation, pain relief and other supportive measures.

We have a 70 bedded adult ICU beds which caters to wide variety of critically ill adult patients with multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, sepsis, pneumonia including COVID 19, ARDS, poisoning, polytrauma, snake bite, head injury, myocardial infarction, stroke, kidney failure, liver failure, post operative patients with complications, obstetric emergencies and oncological emergencies.

Ours is the only institute in this region to have a critical care department with qualified critical care physicians who are trained with highest degree Doctorate of Medicine (DM) from prestigious national institutes. The ICU team currently includes 2 DM graduates, 2 IDCCM graduates and 4 post MD graduates who cover the ICU round the clock 24*7. The team includes critical care nursing trained nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, dietitian and spiritual directors who help in providing good holistic care to critically ill patients. Our team is capable of handling all medical and surgical emergencies round the clock.

We have a good academic program with regular classes for postgraduates, nurses, respiratory therapists which includes seminars, lectures, inter-departmental discussions, bedside clinics, journal club, mortality and morbidity meetings. As a team, the department actively develops clinical protocols, multidisciplinary committees and champions quality improvement programs to enrich overall quality of patient care. It is our endeavor as a team to work with other departments to provide modern, world-class evidence based quality care to all our patients.

The vision of our department is to start academic courses like Doctorate of Medicine (DM) Critical Care Medicine, Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine (IDCCM) in the near future. We plan to provide advanced levels of intensive care support like CRRT, ECMO in due course of time.
