On World Diabetes Day 14th
November 2024, the Department of Community Medicine conducted a symposium on
“Diabetic Care – A collaborative approach in primary health care” from 2:00 p.m.
to 4:30 p.m. at AV Hall. This symposium brought together experts to explore the
latest advancements and best practices in diabetic care in the primary care settings.
The programme started at 2:00pm with welcome speech by Dr Anissa Mary Thomas
Thattil, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine.
This was followed by first session of
symposium by Dr Manjunath J, Professor, Department of Nephrology, Father Muller
Medical College. He has clearly highlighted the critical role of kidney health
in diabetes management and how primary healthcare providers can effectively
monitor and manage diabetic kidney complications at the community level. His
explanation is comprehensive, yet accessible, making complex concepts like
diabetic nephropathy and renal function monitoring understandable for
healthcare professionals working in primary care. The next session was by Dr.
Nandakishore B, Associate Professor, Department of Urology, FMMC. He explained
the urological and sexual symptoms mainly faced by the diabetes patients and
the simple management techniques at primary health care level. It was followed
by the interactive session by Dr Sudeep, Professor, Department of
Endocrinology, Father Muller Medical College. Then it was followed by the
session on diabetic peripheral neuropathy by Dr. Vimala Colaco, Associate
Professor, Department of Neurology and Diabetic retinopathy and management at
primary health care level by Dr Vinay PG, Associate Professor, Department of
Ophthalmology.
It was followed by Q
& A session, moderated by Dr Rachana K, Organising Secretary for the
symposium. A total of 71 participants attended the symposium. The programme
ended with Vote of thanks and High tea.
