The Department of General Surgery, Father Muller Medical College, in collaboration with Medtronic India conducted a mentorship training programme on 28.03.2026.
The mentorship training programme focused around training the young aspiring surgeons in Laparoscopic hernia surgeries (Inguinal and umbilical). It was guided by Dr. Rakesh Rai A, Professor and HOD department of General Surgery, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore who is pioneer in field of the laparoscopy especially in laparoscopic hernia repair.
A Total of 5 candidates from around Karnataka selected for this mentorship programme who were practicing laparoscopic surgeons and are aspiring to learn advanced laparoscopic hernia surgeries.
The total of 3 surgeries were performed. One 3D Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, and 1 2D laparoscopic hernia repair and 1 Total extraperitoneal repair for Umbilical hernia was done
The surgery started around 8.30am with the 3D inguinal hernia repair. Dr. Rakesh Rai explained the candidates anatomy of the inguinal region relevant to laparoscopic surgeries. And a brief demonstration and lecture was carried about - Port placement techniques, Dissection of preperitoneal space, Identification of anatomical landmarks,Mesh placement and fixation and avoidance of complications
Second case was TEP repair for Umbilical hernia where a small infra-umbilical incision made and preperitoneal space was created using blunt dissection.Umbilical defect visualized from preperitoneal side, defect closed ,Mesh placed in preperitoneal space covering defect and fixed with tackers all queries regarding plane creation, Identification of landmarks were addressed
Third case was done which was 2D left inguinal laparoscopic hernia repair.
The workshop was highly informative and well-received by participants. It significantly improved their understanding of laparoscopic hernia repair techniques. Feedback collected indicated high satisfaction regarding both academic and practical sessions.
