Guest lecture - Hospital Acquired infection & HIC

Father Muller Department of Hospital administration conducted a guest lecture about Hospital Acquired infection & HIC (Hospital Infection committee) on March 26, 2022. Dr Thomas S Kuruvilla was the resource person for the session. The session started at 9.00 am.
The session began with a welcome and an introduction to Dr. Thomas S Kuruvilla by Leandra Menezes of 1st MHA. Dr. Thomas gave an introduction on the Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI). He told about different types of hospital acquired infection, some of them being CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP AND ESI.
CLABSI means Central Line Infection, occurs when bacteria or other germs enter the patient's central line and then enter into their bloodstream. These infections are serious but often can be successfully located. A urinary Tact Infection (UTI) is an infection involving any part of the urinary system. The most important risk factor for developing catheter associated UTI (CAUTI) is prolonged use of the urinary catheter. Ventilator associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a pneumonia that develops 48 hours or longer after mechanical ventilation given by an ondoteacheal tube. Surgical Site Infection (SSI) occurs after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. He explained about infection control Indicators that focuses on surgical wound infections, use of urinary catheterization, VAP, Primary bloodstream Infection.
At the end of the session, students practiced the 5 steps of hand hygiene. In conclusion, the precautions for infection prevention should be effectively followed in every hospital and should include hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, routine environmental cleaning, and safe use and disposal of sharps. The session ended at 10.00 am with a vote of thanks given by Ms. Vanisha of 1st MHA.
