Department of Psychiatry organized PSYCME’25 on 8th November 2025. The session aimed at enriching the clinical acumen of interns and post-graduates in psychiatry, focusing on enhancing their skills in psychiatric case taking and mental status examination.

The session was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Rev. Fr Donald Nilesh Crasta, Administrator, Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College; Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran, Principal, Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College; Dr Vilma Meera Dsouza, Vice Principal, Father Muller Homoeopathic

Medical College; Dr Girish Navada U.K., Medical Superintendent, HOD, Department of Psychiatry; Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital; Dr Justina M Steefan, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry; Dr Manu Manjith, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry.

The resource person for the day was Dr Keerthana Nayak (MBBS, MD Psychiatry, PG Diploma in Medical Law & Ethics), who delivered a captivating and interactive session on the topic “Listening Beyond Words Mastering Psychiatric Case Taking and MSE.”

The program began with a prayer song led by the residents of the Psychiatry Department, followed by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. This was followed by a welcome address and message by Dr Girish Navada U.K., Head of the Department of Psychiatry, who then requested Dr E.S.J. Prabhu Kiran, Principal, Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College, to welcome the resource person, Dr Keerthana Nayak, with a floral bouquet.

The Administrator then felicitated the resource person with a token of appreciation, acknowledging her valuable contribution to the field of psychiatry.

This was followed by the Administrator’s message, who shared profound insights into the essence of psychiatry, stating that “Psychiatry begins where words end and when silence speaks volumes,” emphasizing the depth of empathy and understanding required in the discipline. The inaugural ceremony,

presided over by the dignitaries, highlighted the institution’s unwavering commitment to holistic mental health education and training.

Dr Justina M Steefan, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, warmly introduced the speaker, Dr Keerthana Nayak, highlighting her academic accomplishments and expertise in the field of psychiatry.

The official inaugural ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Manu Manjith, who graciously acknowledged the contributions of the dignitaries, the resource person, and all participants. The event ended on an inspiring note, reinforcing the department’s mission to cultivate clinical competence and compassionate care in mental health practice.

Dr Keerthana Nayak, in her insightful lecture, emphasized the importance of empathetic listening, keen observation, and interpretation beyond verbal communication during psychiatric evaluations. She provided practical tips on conducting effective psychiatric case taking and mental status examination (MSE), helping students strengthen their clinical understanding and diagnostic precision. Dr Keerthana presented the MSE in a concise and highly comprehensible manner, making complex concepts easy to grasp. She also highlighted the differences between neurological and psychiatric cases, enhancing the participants’ diagnostic approach.

The session was highly interactive, with many attendees raising queries, all of which she addressed with remarkable clarity and depth.
