Dec 12, 2025

The Department of Practice of Medicine organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) FOCUZ 2025 titled “Clinical Decision-Making in IV Fluid Therapy: A Practical Approach.” on 12th December 2025 from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. at the Skill Lab Seminar Hall.

The seminar was aimed at enhancing the clinical competence of postgraduate scholars and faculty members in the rational selection, administration, and monitoring of intravenous fluids in routine clinical practice.

The scientific session was delivered by Mr. Ashwin Bromeo J, Professor of Medical-Surgical Nursing (Critical Care Nursing), who shared valuable practical insights into intravenous fluid therapy with an emphasis on real-time clinical decision-making and hands-on clinical application.

The programme commenced with a formal inaugural session, with Dr. Nandana Krishna serving as the Master of Ceremony and initiating the proceedings with a brief introduction, followed by a prayer song rendered by Dr. Parvathinandha Rajan.

The gathering was formally welcomed by Dr. M. K. Kamath, Head of the Department of Practice of Medicine. The resource person was introduced by Dr. G. Rajachandra, PG Coordinator, and Dr. Girish Navada, MS, presented the memento to the resource person. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sushmitha, after which the inaugural session concluded with the Institutional Anthem.

All postgraduate scholars from the seven disciplines and faculty members of the college were present, with a total attendance of 75 participants.

The scientific deliberations focused on the principles and clinical application of intravenous fluid therapy, including an overview of commonly used IV fluids and their physiological basis, clinical decision-making in fluid selection based on patient conditions, assessment of fluid requirements, monitoring therapeutic response, and identification and prevention of complications arising from improper fluid administration. Emphasis was placed on adopting an evidence-based and patient-centric approach in IV fluid management. This was followed by a practical demonstration of phlebotomy incorporating OSCE-based venepuncture guidelines, which enabled participants to observe correct techniques, aseptic precautions, and essential procedural competencies required for effective clinical practice.

Feedback was collected from the participants through a structured Google feedback form, and the overall response to the seminar was highly positive.
