INTERNATIONAL MIDWIVES DAY CELEBRATION

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing, Father Muller College of Nursing observed International Midwives Day on 5th May 2026 at 9:00 a.m. at Decennial Memorial Hall, FMCI in collaboration with Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay. The program was based on the theme One Million More Midwives,” highlighting the importance of strengthening the midwifery workforce.

The celebration began with a prayer led by Carol and team, VII Semester BSc Nursing students of FMCON, and a welcome address by Prof. Precilla L. Dsilva, Organizing Chairperson. This was followed by the ceremonial lamp lighting by the Chief Guest, Sr. Jacintha Fernandes SCCG, RNRM, the President Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director, FMCI, along with other dignitaries. The theme was officially unveiled and its significance was explained to the audience. A felicitation ceremony was conducted to honor a midwife for her valuable contributions to the field. The Chief Guest then addressed the gathering. . The programme also included prize distribution and the presidential address, and concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Thamizharasi N., Organizing Secretary, followed by refreshments.

As part of the program, an innovative initiative titled “Maatr Vidya” was inaugurated in the maternity ward and labour room at 10:15 a.m. to educate and support antenatal and postnatal mothers. Thereafter, a panel discussion on “Challenges Faced by Midwives” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., where key issues in midwifery practice were discussed.

The program helped create awareness about the vital role of midwives and emphasized the need to support and strengthen midwifery services.
