World Breast Feeding Week

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nursing, Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, inaugurated World Breastfeeding Week on 2nd August 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Father Muller Hospital, Thumbay. The event was held with great enthusiasm to promote awareness around this year’s theme: “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.”

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. Aparna Baliga, Consultant at Father Muller Hospital Thumbay, who was the Chief Guest for the event. In her keynote address, Dr. Baliga emphasized the significance of breastfeeding in ensuring both maternal and child well-being. She elaborated on the physical, emotional, and psychological benefits of breastfeeding and stressed the importance of creating structured support systems within healthcare settings to encourage and sustain breastfeeding practices.

The event was presided over by Rev. Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo, Administrator of FMHT whose presence lent valuable support to the initiative. Also present were Dr. Reena Wilma Frank, Principal of Father Muller Nursing College, Thumbay (FMNCT), and Mrs. Janet Sequeira, Vice Principal of FMNCT.

Dr. Reena Wilma Frank delivered an informative talk on exclusive breastfeeding, highlighting its importance in the first six months of an infant’s life. She spoke about its role in enhancing immunity, preventing infections, and contributing to healthy growth and cognitive development.

The program was efficiently compered by Ms. Jerlyn Dsouza, a 6th-semester B.Sc. Nursing student, whose confident and professional presentation ensured a smooth flow of the event. The program concluded with the Institutional Anthem, echoing the values and spirit of the Father Muller Charitable Institutions.

The observance of World Breastfeeding Week at FMHT aimed to raise awareness among healthcare professionals, students, and the community about the importance of building supportive environments that empower and enable mothers to practice breastfeeding confidently and effectively.
